But, while both are five-door hatches sharing similar profiles, cut lines and green-tinged halos... they've got vastly different designs. Below the jump, we've detailed seven of the literally tens of differences between the two happy hybrids. And yes, we're even including the big "H" on the front of the <a href="http://jalopnik.com/5045333/new-honda-insight-hybrid-revealed-expected-18500-price-tag-to-make-it-worlds-cheapest">2010 Honda Insight</a>.<p></p> <p><br /></p><center><img src="http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/12/2008/09/494x_PriusVsInsight.jpg" class="center image494" width="494" /></center><p></p> <p><strong>Difference #1:</strong> Instead of going with the stylized T, as on the Prius, the new Insight has a very defined H above the grille. This is a difference of 11 letter positions in the alphabet and a sign that Honda is the true Maverick in this race.</p> <p><strong>Difference #2:</strong> The Toyota Prius is very noticeable from the rear because of its squarer clear taillights housing red LED lights. The engineers from Honda have focused on a more angular look for their clear taillights with red LED lights.</p> <p><strong>Difference #3:</strong> Honda stepped out with some fairly trick split five-spoke wheels that look much hotter than the boring seven-spoke Prius design. We're not sure if these will make it from concept to reality.</p> <p><strong>Difference #4:</strong> The Prius has been faulted for its bland nose and utilitarian look, which Honda has countered with a more <a href="http://jalopnik.com/cars/tokyo-auto-show/tokyo-motor-show-honda-cr+z-concept-car-314350.php">Honda CRZ</a>-inspired front; it's more dramatic, modern and captivating in its vanilla <a href="http://jalopnik.com/cars/news/hi-im-dave-fords-new-design-direction-148982.php">quasi-Dave look</a>. The design makes the new Insight look like a more expensive car than the Prius.</p> <p><strong>Difference #5:</strong> Toyota engineers love boxes and Honda deviated wildly from this path by introducing a round fuel access cover. That's change you can not only believe in, but it's change that signals the outside-the-box thinking you've come to expect from Honda.</p> <p><strong>Difference #6:</strong> As opposed to headlights that wrap upwards from a sharply curving grille, the Insight's lights curve outward from a sharply curving grille. It's so different — like apples and pears.</p> <p><strong>Difference #7:</strong> One of the features that differentiates the Prius from other cars on the road, visually, is that little window behind the A-pillar and ahead of the mirrors. The low belt-line of both of these cars necessitates such a move but Honda hides it, using a cheater panel aft of the mirror and a supporting strip behind the mirror. It's a smart design change that'll really help separate it from the crowd.</p> <p>So there you have it — two totally different vehicles. Maybe yes. Maybe no.<br /><br />You generally can't deduct the cost of installing central air conditioning, adding a sunroom or replacing the roof, for example, in the year you spend the money. But if you keep track of those expenses, they may help you reduce your taxes in the year when you finally sell your house.<br />Improvements Versus Repairs<br /><br />Money you spend on your home breaks down into two categories, taxwise: The cost of improvements versus the cost of repairs.<br /><br />The cost of capital improvements add to your tax basis, which is the amount you'll subtract from the sales price to determine the size of your profit. A capital improvement is something that adds value to your home, prolongs its life or adapts it to new uses. There's no laundry list of what qualifies, but you can be sure that you can add the cost of what you pay for an addition to the house, a swimming pool and a new central air-conditioning system. It's not restricted to big-buck items, though. A new water heater counts, as do an intercom or security system or new storm windows.<br /><br />The cost of repairs, on the other hand, don't add to your basis. Fixing a gutter, painting a room, or replacing a window pane are repairs rather than improvements.<br /><br />In the past, it was critical for homeowners to save receipts for anything that could qualify as an improvement. Every dime added to basis was a dime less that the IRS could tax when the house was sold.<br /><br />But now that most home-sale profit is tax free, there's no guarantee that carefully tracking your basis will pay off.<br />Save When You Sell<br /><br />Under current law, the first $250,000 of profit on the sale of a home is tax-free ($500,000 for married couples who file joint returns) if you have owned and lived in the home for two of the five years leading up to the sale. When this rule was put into the tax law, a lot of advisors thought it meant homeowners no longer had to track their basis. After all, how likely was it that someone would score a quarter of a million dollar profit (or a cool half a mil) on their home? But then came the housing boom of the late 1990s and early 2000s and many homeowners were reacquainted with the importance of keeping good records.<br /><br />To determine the size of your profit when you sell, you take everything you paid for the house, the original purchase price, fees, and so on, and add the cost of all the improvements you have made over the years to get a grand total, which is known as the "adjusted basis." (If you sold a home prior to 1999 and took advantage of the old rule that let home seller put off the tax on their profit by "rolling" the profit into a new home, your adjusted basis is reduced by the amount of any rolled-over profit.) Compare the adjusted basis with the sales price you get for the house and if you've made a profit, that gain may be taxable (if it is more than $250,000 for an individual or $500,000 for a married couple filing jointly). I was a little apprehensive about this as we had taken the boys to a warship before in Washington & they had got kinda bored, but I had forgotten that this time there was the Aeroplane factor too. this meant that they did a bit of ship followed by planes followed by ship etc etc, it was well worth going to and the headset guides that you got as part of your entrance fee were well worth it. These pictures have been up for a while, but I have been lax in posting them so go take a look at them now. The big highlight for the boys was that they got to ride on a mechanical bull which they thought was <span style="font-style:italic;">very </span>exciting. those pictures are towards the end of the set. Although we had to leave early before the bull riding we had a lot of fun and we will go there again, but this time get there a little earlier so that we can sit on the shady side. Then Jon & I started on the new one in 4 of our trees, so far we only have the deck up which is a little further than our Dad ever got. However there is a ways to go as we still have walls and roof to install! What a busy day, but really fun. It was the first time I'd been to an arcade & not worried about how many quarters I had to feed the machines - I even came home with about another hours worth of tokens for when we go again! However stubbornness has been redefined with him, if he makes his mind up - that's it and he will pout and sulk rather than be convinced otherwise. He's getting excited about his upcoming birthday after Ethan had his - I have no idea what we will be doing for his birthday as yet. Rachelle told me that one thing that he's doing now is using his leap pad <img src="http://www.leapfrog.com/content/product_images/4leappadfirst1.jpg"> Ethan never really go into it when he had it as he never had the patience to listen to the instructions before trying to press things, Jamin actually does!!<br /><br />Elizabeth:<br />Well as is to be expected Elizabeth has the biggest jumps since her last update. She has learnt to pull herself up <img src="http://www.riya.com/fileServer?p=9c919011e64437b6d331594f73df0b212eeb9590.jpg_screenres&websiteid=" border="0" /> she is also growing her next 2 teeth out - more bottom ones. Crawling is definitely mastered if you turn round she's gone, and now we constantly have to ensure that the boys pick up the little things off their floor, combined with being able to pull herself up the remote is no longer safe on the coffee table and is now fair game.<br />She is almost out of her Jonny Jump up <img src="http://www.riya.com/fileServer?p=ed9969ade88f46f592ad7f36193f519ba931a25f.jpg_screenres&websiteid=" border="0" /> but is really getting into her "seat scooter" <img src="http://www.riya.com/fileServer?p=4098bbcb54d6095f6819e692fb142e246c3ab338.jpg_screenres&websiteid=" border="0" /> which she has now learnt to push forward as well as go back. She also went on her first horse ride with Mummy last weekend, as previously she had just sat on the horse when it was still, this time she got to walk around and thought it was great.<br /><br />phew, big post, but big stuff has been happening, I really must get Rachelle to post too, which she hasn't for YEARS but you never know, maybe by email, we will see. He is very competitive, pushing everyone (including his teammates) out of the way to get to the ball.<br />2. He is very athletic (he can out pace most of his peers)<br />3. He can be very whiny (he almost cried at the end of the game because he didn't score the last goal, his teammate Bryce did)<br />4. He's good! This will result in a great leap up the wing with the ball, followed by a goal kick for the other team as he "shoots" straight off the end of the pitch instead of bringing it into the middle &amp; shooting for the goal.<br /><br />You may have noticed the lack of a goalie - this is done intentionally at his age as they play 3 on 3 I must admit looking back this is way more effective than when I played at his age with 20 kids in a big huddle around the ball slowly oscillating around the pitch, whilst 2 others stand at each end watching.<br /><br />As his Dad I need to work on:<br />1. His teamwork: If he played with Bryce instead of competing against him they could kick butt!<br />2. His attitude: I really need to encourage him that 5 goals is great and that he should be very happy with that. I also need to teach him that he doesn't need to go <i>through</i> everyone who gets in his way.<br />3. Why do I want this you may ask - well at work I run 3 machines at the same time and when I start a compile on one I usually flip to another to get something else done - I have always wanted something which would let me know when the 1st machine is done, this project would let me monitor process activity and maybe I could get it to trigger on the system idle process going over 50% - thus indicating my compile is done - why trigger on the idle process you may ask?
