I figured out by myself what was wrong after my previous post and getting a reply from Ben at Google finance. Although Ben didn't help me find the solution I did so by myself:~
so there you have it Google finance quotes in Google Calendar work as long as you have your settings for US English for your language and the US as your country.

I finally had the brilliant idea of changing my language in settings from English UK to English US and it then worked (my country was always United states) so you have to be in the US and select English US for this to work.
so there you have it Google finance quotes in Google Calendar work as long as you have your settings for US English for your language and the US as your country.
